Published byJack under News

Via NKEconWatch:
UPDATE 3: Northeast Asia Matters has posted a copy of the DPRK constitution in English.  Click here to read.
I have been looking for this for quite some time, and now it is available. Reading through it, not huge, groundbreaking changes were made, but enough to (what I guess) a legacy for Kim. Tim will [...]

North Korea News

Published byJack under News

Yes, it has been a while since I have been regularly posting news, and maybe today is a good day to start. Some news has come from North Korea, although nothing really earth-shattering.
North Korea May Be Open to Talks (New York Times) – In a chilling turn of events, Kim is willing to go back [...]

Reuters: North Korea's "Hotel of Doom" gets a face lift

Published byJack under North Korea

It appears the Ryugyong Hotel is making some progress, at least on the outside. When construction resumed sometime last year, I almost fell out of my chair. I could not believe such a project would ever resume with the many serious problems this thing obviously has. So I open Google News this morning, and see [...]

Some details are starting to emerge about how Euna Lee and Laura Ling crossed the border. According to Bloomberg:

North Korea in the news

Published byJack under News, North Korea

It has been very slow posting as of late, and I would like to apologize for that.
An ROK fishing boat has been released in a “goodwill measure” from the DPRK. The four man crew has been released along with the boat, and according to the article:
The North’s recent barrage of conciliatory gestures has been surprising, [...]

News of the century: Kim Jong Il still in control of North Korea

Published byJack under North Korea

Here is a bit of news that should stun the world, and then some: Kim Jong Il is still in control of North Korea. As obvious as this statement is, perhaps this needs to be reiterated in the midst of all that is happening. For instance, you have all the rumors of his health, succession, [...]

How much will this cost? (Update 5)

Published byJack under North Korea

Update: A “press release” from the KCNA.
The DPRK visit of Clinton and his party will contribute to deepening the understanding between the DPRK and the U.S. and building the bilateral confidence.
Uhhh, yeah.
Update: ROK Drop has the scoop! The journalists have been freed. This is certainly good news. I am very curious to hear their story, [...]

Kim Jong Il's pancreatic cancer?

Published byJack under North Korea

Speculation abounds about the health of the ever-reclusive leader of the DPRK. As usual, this leads to who may control the country if this is indeed the case. Naturally, as with anything North Korea, speculation is all we have, no matter who says otherwise including “intelligence sources”. How many times have these so-called sources been [...]

Two American journalists sentenced for 12 years (update)

Published byJack under North Korea

Update: The DailyNK has a good article to give some hope. I like hope, well, as hopeful as this situation can be. While nobody can be certain where they will be held, this article does make sense (somewhat), because of these women are worked to death, or sent to a camp like Yodok, how can [...]

Kim Jong Nam interview and other news

Published byJack under North Korea

BBC reports a non-confirmation confirmation on his brother’s succession. This is the first time I ever heard Kim Jong Nam speak. I cannot embed the video here, so I will give you a link to the story instead. What role, if any, Jong Nam plays in North Korea is uncertain, and if he does know [...]
