English translation of the DPRK constitution available

Published byJack under News

Via NKEconWatch:
UPDATE 3: Northeast Asia Matters has posted a copy of the DPRK constitution in English.  Click here to read.
I have been looking for this for quite some time, and now it is available. Reading through it, not huge, groundbreaking changes were made, but enough to (what I guess) a legacy for Kim. Tim will [...]

North Korea News

Published byJack under News

North Korea May Be Open to Talks (New York Times) – In a chilling turn of events, Kim is willing to go back [...]

North Korea in the news

Published byJack under News, North Korea

It has been very slow posting as of late, and I would like to apologize for that.
An ROK fishing boat has been released in a “goodwill measure” from the DPRK. The four man crew has been released along with the boat, and according to the article:
The North’s recent barrage of conciliatory gestures has been surprising, [...]

New generals named and other news

Published byJack under News

Update: See North Korean Economy Watch
Before I begin the entry, let me apologize for the lack of updates. However, this site may not be missed because the other Korea-centric blogs are keeping up with the news just fine. With that said…
It appears the DPRK has shuffled the NDC, and while little if nothing is known [...]

Setting the stage for disengagement?

Published byJack under News

Two stories caught my eye today when browsing the news. One was regarding the asking of increased aid and the other was the supposed announcement about plutonium has been made into weapons. Now why would North Korea decide to announce the plutonium has been made into weapons-grade goodies yet look to the United States for [...]

North Korean envoy to the inauguration?

Published byJack under News

If things cannot get any stranger, it could have if this offer was accepted.
North Korea offered to send its chief nuclear negotiator to next week’s inauguration of US President-elect Barack Obama, but Washington has responded coolly, South Korean news reports said Monday.
It would be historical to say the least, but would be a political disaster [...]

It is a slow news day in North Korea

Published byJack under News

Yes, it has been a slow news day in North Korea, and with that said, I might as well post some other stuff that may have nothing to do with North Korea.
On CNN, President-elect Barack Obama encouraged others to give a better idea on how to get the economy moving again (I cannot find it [...]

Update: North Korea needs to pay $65 million to Pueblo victims

An interesting story from the AP wires:
WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge has awarded more than $65 million to several men of the USS Pueblo, who were captured and tortured by North Korea back in the 1960s.
U.S. District Judge Henry H. Kennedy Jr. issued the judgment against North Korea on Tuesday.

Interesting WSJ op ed

Published byJack under News

Check out the latest op ed from the Wall Street Journal. This is regarding what should be done in the Obama administration with North Korea’s human rights and nuke issue. While I agree that’s part of the solution, I do not see it happening any time soon.

Condi: You'd have to be an idiot to trust the North Koreans

Published byJack under News

Condi Rice said the obvious:
“I mean, who trusts the North Koreans? You’d have to be an idiot to trust the North Koreans,” she was quoted as saying by the state-funded radio station. Rice was speaking to experts at the Council of Foreign Relations, a U.S. private think tank.
To be sure, the talks have been by [...]
